"I wonder if you realize what you did for us all."
Just wanted to thank all the staff for allowing my children to be a part of Camp Little Red Door. Life has been hard in our house for the last several years. I wonder if you realize what you did for us all.
It was our son’s first time away from me he was scared and not quite sure he wanted to do this. I knew this was something he should do as most 9 year-olds love to spend the night away. He had such a positive uplifting experience at this camp. He loved all the activities, Dr. Melemed, and all the counselors. He is still talking about camp, singing songs, and talking about next year. His counselor told me he cried at the closing campfire because he was just so sad it was over.
As for our daughter, she has been left out a lot over the past few years. Unfortunately, whatever was going on in her life was always overshadowed by her sick brother. She is a great kid and never complained, but it still makes me sad to think of all the things she missed out on too. There were so many times that instead of attending a school function, we were on our way to the hospital to check in because her brother had a fever. She really couldn’t have friends over because his blood counts were always so low couldn’t risk someone bringing germs in.
She is also still talking about camp, her counselors, and hoping she gets to go again next year. This was the one time that because of her brother’s illness, she got to do something really FUN!
As for me and my husband, we really missed the kids. We have not had an evening to ourselves since our son was diagnosed six years ago. We went to a movie!
Although we worried (like any parent would), I know it was really good for us and our kids to have a little time to ourselves. I was so impressed with the camp and how smoothly everything went. I did call and check on the kids and received a call back within a couple of hours with lots of details. This was very reassuring and I didn’t feel the need to call again.
I have not heard one negative comment from either one of my kids. They can’t wait to go back and they want to bring their own toilet paper and squirt guns for cabin raiding. They had a blast!
We are still struggling with our finances due to the illness and probably will for the next several years. Our kids would not have been able to attend this camp if there had been a large fee like there is for most camps. It doesn’t seem like enough to just say, Thank you! But thank you from all of us. You have touched our whole family.
We really appreciate the work you do. It was very obvious that a lot of work goes into this wonderful camp. This was truly a great experience for all of us.
