From the
Executive Director

Dear Friends,

This is Little Red Door’s 60th year of service. The years we have spent touching the lives of others have produced an incalculable number of Little Red Door “stories.” In early August, I was the guest speaker at a luncheon where two people sought me out to tell me how Little Red Door had helped their respective grandmothers. A golfer told me how our camp had helped his son. The deli clerk at my supermarket saw my Little Red Door cap, and told me how our organization assisted his cousin. A dear lady in Florida was once a client, and is now able to help us help others.

Without fail, each time I speak to groups, someone has a story about someone they love who turned to us for help. Generation after generation, Little Red Door has been the constant source of hope for lives shaken by one word: cancer. The hope comes from the direct services we give, the screenings we provide, the education we promote, and the doors we open; One person after another, time and time again. Our ability to do this is because of you and your generous support. Those grandmothers, the cousin, the son, and the Floridian are most grateful. Chances are you helped us help one of them in a very dark moment. Thanks for helping us make the most of life and the least of cancer. We cannot do that without you!

Ovarian and Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month

Every year, 82,000 women are diagnosed with a Gynecologic Cancer – a cancer of the reproductive organs. It’s a tragic irony that what is a source of life, can become a starting point of a deadly disease for women. The cancer can invade the uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, vagina or vulva.

Let’s take a moment to focus on Ovarian Cancer.

Ovarian Cancer is the most serious of all Gynecologic cancers, with an estimated 22,200 new cases and 16,200 deaths in 2005. One serious issue with Ovarian Cancer is that its symptoms can be very vague, or non-existent early on. Typically, symptoms aren’t seen until late in the development of the disease. However, if ovarian cancer is caught in the early stages, survival chances are 80-90%.

A pap smear does not screen for ovarian cancer. Many women assume that their annual pap test screens for ovarian cancer. The pap smear is designed to reveal signs of cervical cancer. Ask your doctor for a complete pelvic exam during your next annual exam to be sure the ovaries are monitored.
Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer:
  • Pressure or fullness in the pelvis
  • Abdominal bloating / swelling
  • Constant and progressive changes in bowel or bladder patterns
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • A feeling of fullness
  • Unusual fatigue
Experiencing some of these symptoms does not mean you have ovarian cancer, but if the symptoms persist, are unusual for you, and you have no other clear cause, you should see a doctor to be checked out.

Risk Factors:
  • The risk of ovarian cancer increases with age, especially around menopause
  • Family history of ovarian, breast, or colon cancer
  • Personal history of breast, endometrial, or colon cancer
  • Infertility and/or not bearing children
Other factors may increase you risk of ovarian cancer:
  • Multiple exposures to fertility drugs
  • Ashkenazi Jewish heritage
  • Genital contact with talc or asbestos that may be in douches or condoms
