From the Executive Director
Dear Friends,
When my mother was diagnosed with cancer and learned she would face chemotherapy, the first thing she did was go to her hair stylist and order a wig. Then she was ready for the treatment. This was a powerful lesson to me of the importance of self-esteem to our health.
There is a special room here called the Little Red Door Boutique. It is a beautifully appointed room, much like a hair salon, where a woman can be fitted for a wig, turban, or prostheses following a mastectomy. There is often a lot of pampering in that room. One day a lady arrived for her Boutique appointment. She was quiet, walked slowly with her cane, head down, and never making

Many employers are willing to provide matching funds for their employees’ gifts. Maybe your employer is one of them?
When you make people feel good about themselves, you help a miracle occur. The Little Red Door Boutique is another way we make the most of life and the least of cancer. Who could imagine that a gift of $100 to purchase a wig and a turban would transform a life? At Little Red Door, it happens all the time.

Seeking nominees for The Lawrence H. Einhorn M.D. Award
Months before next year's Academy Awards, we will be handing out an award of our own. No, not to an actor or actress, but to someone in central Indiana who has made a difference in the lives of people with cancer. We established The Lawrence H. Einhorn M.D. Award in 2004 to honor Dr. Lawrence Einhorn, a distinguished and nationally known oncologist and a member of Indiana University School of Medicine faculty. This year, the award will be presented on October 18, 2006 at “An Evening with The Smothers Brothers”.
To nominate someone for this award, or for more information, visit our website. Nominations due June 30, 2006.
Colorectal CancerColorectal Cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, African Americans, and Hispanics. It is estimated that nearly 60,000 people will die this year due to colorectal cancer.
Despite these hard statistics, hope can be found in regular screenings. It is estimated that nearly 30,000 lives could be saved annually through screening. Since 90% of colorectal cancer occurs in people over the age of 50, it is currently recommended by doctors that everyone be screened starting at age 50. Screening is important in detecting and removing polyps (which can turn into cancer), and diagnosing inflammatory bowel diseases and cancer. [Screening Recommendations]
Among the screening methods now in use, colonoscopy seems to be one of the most popular and effective screening measure for colorectal cancer. However, there is a new screening measure that is less invasive than the traditional colonoscopy called, virtual colonoscopy. To find out more information on screenings, risk factors or signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer, visit our website.
