From the Executive Director
Dear Friends,
Audits often have the excitement of a root canal, but they are a necessary part of being accountable. So why in the world am I writing about an audit? Well, your Little Red Door once again received an unqualified audit for 2005, showing that we work very hard to properly account for and allocate every dollar. We have a dedicated Audit Committee and a Budget and Finance Committee that oversees our finances, to ensure that we adhere to highest policies and standards.

Instead of taking your family out to eat one evening, stay home, pull out your favorite board game, and make a family evening out of it. Then, donate the money you would have spent eating out to Little Red Door. It's fun, easy, and inspires values of community service in your kids. The money you save could provide a woman with a mammogram!
This year, again, we will serve more than 10,000 people in central Indiana, and you know that we use every dollar as wisely as possible. Your continued support deserves that guarantee.

Thanks to The Indianapolis Foundation
In 2005, over 130 people were able to make it to their important cancer-related appointments thanks to our transportation services.
Thanks to a recent grant of $30,000 from The Indianapolis Foundation, an affiliate of the Central Indiana Community Foundation, we are able to continue offering this needed service to the underserved of Central Indiana.
We’d like to give our thanks to the Indianapolis Foundation, and all those who donate to Little Red Door. Your support brings hope and help to men and women every day.

Talk and Walk - Prostate Cancer
In preparation for Unite to Fight: Race Against Prostate Cancer, let’s talk about a few facts related to prostate cancer.
Did you know that...?
- Prostate Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men in the U.S.
- In Indiana, it is estimated that nearly 5,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed and an estimated 570 men will die of the disease in 2006.
- One man in six will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.
- The chances of getting prostate cancer are 1 in 3 if you have a close relative (father, brother) with the disease. The risk is 83% with 2 close relatives and 97% with 3 close relatives.
- African American men have the highest incidence rate of prostate cancer in the world: 1 in 4.
- African American men are 2.5 more times to die from prostate cancer than Caucasian men.
- Obesity is a significant predictor of prostate cancer severity. Men with a body mass index over 32.5, have about 1/3 greater risk of dying from prostate cancer.
Making Informed Decisions about your prostate health:The important thing is that men get informed about the benefits and risks of testing. TALK to your doctors and WALK with us in Unite 2 Fight: Race Against Prostate Cancer on July 8th.
This is a developing issue in the medical community because studies have shown that an elevated PSA test result does not necessarily indicate a prostate cancer diagnosis. It could mean that a man has some other prostate problem such as an enlarged prostate or prostate infection.Testing might not be the best option for all men because there are risks associated with further testing and treatment that can cause more negative side-effects than the disease. For some men, because they have an aggressive form of prostate cancer, early detection and treatment is best. For others, it may be best to delay screening due to their age or other health factors.
