From the
Executive Director

Dear Friends,

A few weeks ago, one of the members of The Circle of Friends brought in a small teddy bear. On its shirt were embroidered two words: “Cancer Sucks.” My mother is a cancer survivor and I will never forget the day she got her diagnosis. “Cancer sucks” summed up everything I felt in that awful moment. Mom is well today because her cancer was caught early and she had access to insurance for the services she needed. Thousands of our friends, family members and neighbors are not as fortunate. That is why Little Red Door is here -- for those who have cancer but don’t have resources to fight it.

Thanks to a most incredible staff, we serve thousands each year through our screening and detection programs, patient services and our educational outreach. When you sign up for one of our golf outings, run/walk in the Race Against Prostate Cancer or attend An Evening with The Manhattan Transfer, you are part of something much bigger. You help us deliver hope and save a life.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation Grant to Aid Transportation Program

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has announced a $75,000 grant to help fund Little Red Door's transportation program. The grant was announced last month following the April meeting of the Anthem Foundation Board of Directors. Little Red Door provides free transportation to cancer treatments and related doctor appointments for qualifying individuals.

Transportation is one of the major barriers to access of health care in the Indianapolis area. In 2004, Little Red Door's transportation program provided 5,729 trips to 203 individuals. Without this program, these individuals would not have been transported to oncology appointments and life-saving treatments. Little Red Door is most grateful for this partnership with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. The grant will enable the Agency to fund several months of its transportation program. Anthem is also a partner with Little Red Door as a major sponsor of the annual "Race Against Prostate Cancer.”

Did you know that American men live less healthy and die younger than American women? In 1920, women lived, on average, one year longer than men. Now, men, on average, die almost six years earlier than women. These statistics, along with others have led to the development of Men's Health Week, a week to spread awareness about men's health issues in America. THIS WEEK, June 13-19 is Men's Health Week.

Health Facts:
  • American men less healthy and die younger than American women.
  • Men die at higher rates than women from the top 10 causes of death and are the victims of over 92% of workplace deaths.

  • Women are 100% more likely to visit the doctor for annual examinations and preventive services than men.
